The Post-Infectious Clinical Syndromes group, formerly known as the Post-Acute Sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 Infection (PASC) group, was founded in 2021 with a research focus on investigating the mechanisms driving the post-acute sequelae of SARS-CoV-2 infection, or Long COVID.

Starting in 2023, the research mandate of this group will broaden to include the study of persistent, post-acute symptoms after infections with viral, bacterial and other pathogens since these syndromes share similarities with long COVID.

MassCPR has provided funding for five research projects related to these areas. They include investigations of autoimmunity, systemic inflammation, and persistent and re-emerging viruses using mouse models and multi-OMIC analyses of human samples.  Ongoing studies focus on the mechanisms driving dysautonomia—a condition marked by abnormalities in the autonomous nervous system that can include breathing, heart rate and blood pressure regulation – as well as the impact of Long COVID in communities of with different socioeconomic status.

Many investigators in this group are also part of the nation-wide initiative RECOVER, established by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) to elucidate and improve our understanding of the long-term health outcomes related to COVID.

This working group meets monthly to share updates from the research project PIs.  Meetings are scheduled month-to-month based on speaker availability.
